Background and History
The Battle of Johnstown happened on October 25, 1781 in the fields to the north of Johnson Hall in Johnstown, NY when a group of 416 American militiamen engaged 700+ British and loyalist forces. Despite being outnumbered, the Americans, led by Colonel Marinus Willett, forced a British retreat.
The battle occurred around the same time word arrived of the British surrender at Yorktown and marked the last significant conflict of the American Revolutionary War in the Mohawk Valley. There is supposedly a "mass grave,"which has yet to be discovered.
